A study found that people with both conditions ie having low blood bicarbonate or low pH of blood , shown benefit by intake of oral bicarbonate supplements over a period of years. The evidence supports the fact that these supplements can be used in the treatment although further research is needed to confirm the same finding. The exact standard treatment for chronic kidney disease patients varies . Some patients may receive receive sodium bicarbonate tablets as part of their treatment to counteract with the acid base imbalance.

Some clinical studies support the efficacy of alkalization in slowing down the decline in glomerular filtration rate in kidney diseases. It can also be used to alkalize urine in patients with kidney cyst to provide relief of symptoms and chances of development of uric acid stones in the kidney. Currently, therapeutic use of NaHCO3in many medical conditions is being widely accepted for use in prevention or management. The typical diet of people living in industrialised areas have high consumption of acid producing non vegetarian sources like meat, eggs, fish and low in fruits and vegetables.
